If you are looking for a sound investment which has
regularly paid well over the odds on particularly long term
investments the buying and selling of gold and coins must
be worth considering. If you're thinking about buying bulk,
the cheapest way would be in gold bars, but there are also
Krugerrands and Sovereigns to consider. Although there are
many other types of gold coins, they are expensive and as a
buyer you would need to be quite an authority on the
subject.
Gold Sovereigns. These are very popular because they're
small and attractive and have some history to them. There
is usually a small premium (around 2%) for the privilege of
buying them but many think this is a small price to pay for
a bit of history. They are a particularly sound long term
investment.
Krugerrands. These are the most popular of the modern one
ounce gold bullion coins. They are widely available and can
be bought in larger quantities than other coins.
Unfortunately they're not nearly as attractive as the
sovereigns and don't have any real historical value but
their quality is consistently high and they therefore make
a very cost effective way for a small time investor to buy
gold. They are always very precise and weight exactly one
ounce of gold.
Gold bars. Although this may seem the most logical way of
buying gold but remember that the price per ounce will be
exactly the same as buying a Krugerrand, you should be able
to negotiate a discount if you are buying more than one
Krugerrand. If, however, you want to buy larger quantities
of gold most people would invest in, say, a kilo bar which,
although it would be cheaper pro rata than Kruggerands,
would be more difficult to sell again and remember that you
cannot sell just a part of a kilo bar!
The price of gold is forever moving and your success as an
investor will depend on the buying and selling you can
produce at the right time. This will become easier as the
markets become more familiar to you but there are people
who you can consult. Probably the main rule of thumb for a
successful investment is to aim to buy within ten per cent
of the bottom and sell within ten per cent of the top. You
will find web sites that can give you live gold prices from
anywhere in the world at any time of the day.
When you have your coins, keep them in a safe, dry place
and unless you are very knowledgeable, don't be tempted to
clean them unless it's just with warm, soapy water. Any
abrasive cleaners or brushes can ruin your coins because
gold is such a soft metal. It's unlikely to become
discoloured as it is a 'noble' metal it is unlikely to
become discoloured. If you are advised that the coins need
cleaning then make sure the work is carried out by a
professional.
