Cheese, Anyone?

Cheese is one of those adaptable foods which can readily
accentuate a large variety of entrees, snacks, and side
dishes. It is produced through fermentation of milk and is
one of the oldest foods known to humans. From caravans
traversing the barren Asian steppes to suave sophisticates
consuming it in chic French restaurants, cheese is served
in the most isolated of locations to the most lavish and
has done so throughout the progression of civilization.
Cheese ravioli, cheese pizza, and cheese fondue are just
some of the recipes that many cooks employ to make use of
the great taste and texture of this unique dairy food.
Alfredo sauce and a variety of cheese toppings on
vegetables, meats, and pastas allow cheese to be prepared
in an entire range of ways, from creamy sauce to chunky
salad dressing. Without these special dishes, our menus
would taste quite different and perhaps not as good.
A number of favorite recipes also call for cheese in a wide
array of side dishes. A couple of examples of how cheese
can make great foods even better are cheese and broccoli or
as a topper for a baked potato. Parmesan is great on a
number of vegetables, stews and salads and asiago bread
makes for great sandwiches. Scrambled eggs and fried
potatoes are greatly accentuated with a little cheese. And
who could forget about the grilled cheese sandwich?
Snacks really come to life with the addition of this
healthy favorite. Think about cheese-flavored popcorn,
melted cheese on apple pie, or even string cheese on a
picnic. Chunks of cheese can become the life of any party,
especially when you add sliced lunchmeat or pickle halves.
Cream cheese goes well on bagels or most kinds of bread. It
also makes a terrific addition to many kinds of desserts,
such as frosting, cream pies, and certain kinds of muffins.
Whatever time of the day it is, no matter what you're
hungry for, chances are that some form of cheese may be
just what you're craving. Look for the low-fat variety if
you're counting calories. Or substitute a few chunks of
cheese for that chocolate bar you've got stashed away. It's
not just about milk anymore. Soft, hard, yellow, white,
solid, or filled with holes, there's a cheese to match your
mood, so stop by the grocery store and check out the dairy
case today. Watch for newspaper coupons to bring home an
even better buy.
